Welcome to Sligo Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).
Here at the Annie Finnegan Animal Shelter in Coolaney Co. Sligo we care for animals of all descriptions especially those that have been injured, abused or simply abandoned by their owners. We aim to restore their health and trust and eventually find them a caring permanent home.
We provide assistance and advice to the general public on all aspects of Animal Welfare.
In cooperation with the Gardai, local vets and relevant departments we provide assistance in emergency situations.
As prevention is always better than cure we know that in order to get to the source of the problem of animal cruelty and abuse in this country, we have to lobby the government to change the existing laws (dating back to 1911) and assign responsibility for animal welfare to a single government Department. This Department would have the responsibility for observance and enforcement of all aspects of animal welfare, regardless of the type of animal.
At present, there is no Ministry with responsibility for animal welfare. Individual departments e.g. Environment (Dogs) Agriculture (Food Animals) have limited responsibility in certain areas.
We are a non profit making organisation and rely to a large extent on the kindness and generosity of the general public for donations to carry out the work we do.
Our vision for the future would be a society where animal cruelty and neglect would be the exception rather than the norm which, sadly it now is.
Everyone can play a small part in
order to make a big difference.
