COLLIES IN IRELAND

Here in Ireland the number of unwanted Border Collies far outweighs any other breed. Think very carefully before taking on a Collie as a pet. Collies are highly intelligent and active dogs and are bred to work, herding livestock.

They are not happy to stay at home all day and to have only one walk, they need constant stimulation and company. In a family situation a Collie becomes bored very quickly and will develop all manner of unwanted behaviour problems, the most common being chasing cars. Far too many Collies are killed on the road chasing cars for want of something better to occupy them. However if you are certain that this is the breed of dog for you, and that you will not be able to put him to work on a farm, then we suggest taking up agility training, it's good exercise, mentally stimulating and great fun for both of you.
